FAQ

How pages, Markdown, QR codes, reporting, plans, and privacy work — in one place.

The basics — what ReadmeTag is

What is ReadmeTag and how does it work?

ReadmeTag lets you build a page for anything you want to share — a product, a digital business card, a menu, a portfolio — and publish it at one permanent address with a QR code. You write the content in the dashboard, and the system generates a unique address (readmetag.com/{guid}) plus a QR code ready to print. Anyone who scans the code (or just opens the link) sees your page — and you can change its content anytime, without reprinting anything.

What is a “tag”?

A tag is whatever gets someone to your page — today that's a QR code, and other technologies (like NFC) later. The tag itself isn't the content, just the entry point to it. The address it points to never changes, even if you rewrite the page underneath it.

What's the difference between a Readme page and a Redirect page?

A Readme page is a full page with content you write in Markdown, hosted by us. Redirect is a simpler option if you already have a website, Instagram, or landing page and just need a permanent QR code with scan analytics — after scanning (and one confirmation tap), people land on your external site. You can start with Redirect and switch to a full Readme page later without reprinting your QR code.

Do I need my own website to use ReadmeTag?

No. If you choose a Readme page, all the content is hosted by us — you don't need an existing site. If you already have one and just want a permanent QR code, choose Redirect instead.

What can I use ReadmeTag for?

A product and where it came from, a menu, a price list, a portfolio, a short set of links. If you can put it on a page and hand someone a QR code, it fits.

Content and Markdown

What is Markdown, and why do you use it?

Markdown is a simple way to format text using plain characters (like **bold** or # heading) instead of clicking buttons in an editor. We chose it because it's quick to learn, portable, and doesn't rely on a heavyweight WYSIWYG editor that tends to misbehave on phones. If you've never used it, the dashboard has a cheat sheet (/help) and a live preview as you type.

Do I need to know how to code to edit my page?

No. Markdown is plain text with a handful of simple symbols — not programming. The dashboard shows a live preview, so you see the result immediately.

Can I add photos?

Yes, by linking to an image hosted elsewhere (your own site, a cloud host, etc.). Direct upload isn't available yet.

Can I embed a YouTube video?

Yes — paste the video link on its own line, and it turns into a player automatically.

Can I change the content after the QR code is printed?

Yes — that's the whole point. The QR code only encodes the address ({guid}), not the content itself. You can update the page as many times as you like, and the printed code keeps working unchanged.

How many pages can I create on my account?

It depends on your plan — the Free plan gives you a handful of pages at no cost, and paid plans give you more. See Pricing for details.

QR codes and your page address

How do I generate a QR code for my page and download it for print?

A QR code is generated automatically for every page and available to download from the dashboard (SVG and PDF) — ready to put on packaging, a flyer, or a sticker.

Does my page's address change if I update the content or switch industries?

No. The address (readmetag.com/{guid}) is assigned when the page is created and stays the same if you change the content or the industry, so a printed code keeps working when the offer changes.

Can I start with Redirect and switch to a full Readme page later without reprinting my QR code?

Yes. The address stays the same when you switch from Redirect to a Readme page, so the printed code does not need to change.

Safety, moderation, and reporting content

What content is not allowed on a public page?

Pages are public — anyone who scans the QR can open them, including minors, and we don't use an age gate. You may not publish illegal content, pornographic or sexually explicit content, or pages that promote goods restricted to adults (alcohol, tobacco and nicotine, energy drinks, illegal drugs). Lawfully selling adult-oriented products (e.g. lubricants, lingerie) is fine as long as the description and images are ordinary retail-style, not sexually explicit. Coffee, tea, cocoa, and ordinary food are fine too. We may also take down a page we consider inappropriate for the platform. Details are in the Terms of Service (acceptable use).

Can I report a page if I see something illegal (phishing, hate speech, prohibited content)?

Yes. Every public page has a “Report this page” link — you don't need to be logged in or have an account to report a problem. Report form: Report content. You can also email report@readmetag.com.

What happens after I report a page?

The report goes to the platform operator, who responds without undue delay — that can mean hiding the page while it's reviewed, and in serious cases, referring it to the relevant authorities.

Is my content checked before it's published?

Yes, automatically, at the moment of publishing: we check things like links against known threats (phishing, malware) and the most obvious violations. Checking every page by hand would be too slow — this is a fast, automatic first filter, backed up by the reporting mechanism above.

Can my page be blocked, and when?

Yes, in three situations: (1) the automatic check at publish time finds a dangerous link or an obvious violation, (2) we receive a report and, after review, find it justified, or (3) the content breaks the acceptable-use rules (including 18+ / adult content) or we otherwise consider it inappropriate for a platform anyone can open by scanning a QR code. For Redirect pages, we also periodically recheck the destination address — if the site you're pointing to later turns dangerous (say, a hijacked domain), your page is automatically hidden and you get an email about it.

How do I get a blocked page unblocked?

Fix the content or address that triggered the block, then publish the page again in the dashboard — it goes through the same automatic check. If it keeps getting rejected after you've made changes, or you're not sure why it was blocked, contact us: contact@readmetag.com.

Can I see reports made about my own pages?

Yes — the dashboard shows reports about your pages (only your own, read-only). Acting on a report (for example, deciding to take a page down) is handled by the platform operator, not the page owner.

Account, plans, and limits

Can I start for free?

Yes — the Free plan lets you create a handful of pages at no cost, to start. Full pricing: Pricing.

What happens if I hit my plan's page limit?

You can't create a new page until you free up space (delete or archive an existing one) or upgrade to a higher plan. Existing pages keep working as-is.

What happens to my pages if I don't pay / my account is suspended?

You get a grace period, during which the dashboard tells you about the payment problem before anything stops working publicly — pages don't just disappear without warning.

Can I delete my account and my data?

Yes, the dashboard has an option to delete your account, including a full data export before deletion.

Privacy and analytics

What data do you collect about people who scan my QR code?

Very little — just a count of page views per day, with no country, device, or personal identification. It's deliberately designed this way so it doesn't require a cookie banner or consent for profiling.

Do visitors to my page need to accept cookies?

No — view analytics don't use identifiers that require cookie consent.

Support

How do I contact you if I didn't find my answer here?

Email contact@readmetag.com.

Where can I find help writing Markdown?

In the dashboard, under the “Help” link (available once you're signed in) — a syntax cheat sheet with examples, also reachable from inside the editor.
